A double whammy for Easter: Vote Salmon Out ads, and demands on Woolworths

17/04/2025

Neighbours of Fish Farming continues its targeted action against the unsustainable industrial salmon industry. Ads satirising the 'Come down for Air' tourism campaign begin on SBS and Channel 7 this evening. The TV ads follow a storm of negative press for the industry that has persisted for months. Scandals have emerged daily about diseased salmon being processed for human consumption after millions of fish died, many of which washed up on local tourist beaches.

Added to this, supermarket stocking of Macquarie Harbour "Extinction Salmon" has been targeted again with the lodgement of three resolutions to Woolworths by SIX, and a group of 115 shareholders.

The resolutions call for shareholder votes to increase their power to influence corporate decisions. They demand that Woolworths adopt a nature-risk disclosure policy to ensure that all customers and shareholders are notified when a product is adversely affecting the environment. The resolutions ask for a plan to cease stocking salmon farmed in Macquarie Harbour under the "responsibly sourced" seafood policy.

"After the positive response from shareholders at last year's AGM, followed by a summer of mass mortalities and the industry's unsustainable practices, we are confident the shareholder support for these resolutions will be impossible to ignore at this year's AGM," says Jess Coughlan, NOFF Campaigner.
"Prominent chefs have refused to serve farmed salmon, and thousands of Tasmanians are standing up against a toxic industry and the Federal government that has ignored the undeniable value of nature with its amendments to the EPBC Act," says Lisa Litjens, Acting President, NOFF.
"Woolworths must address the unacceptable issues in their supply chain. There is nothing "responsible" about salmon farming in Macquarie Harbour. The product must be taken off the shelves, and put an end to greenwashing."
