2,000 say Vote Salmon Out! The tide has turned on big salmon.

16/03/2025

Despite the rain and rising tide, 2,000 Tasmanians turned out at Verona Sands to say NO to foreign-owned corporations who put greed and profits over our environment, animal welfare, and our communities. The rally was organised by NOFF, and strongly supported by like-minded groups across Tasmania. Many participants travelled long distances to attend.

Speakers at the rally included Richard Flanagan, author of Toxic, Peter George, Independent candidate for Franklin, Owen Fitzgerald, Greens candidate for Franklin, Kirsten Bacon, local resident and film producer, and Gerard Castles from the Killora Community Association, Bruny Island.

The crowd emphatically said NO to corruption and the salmon barons' influence over government and the EPA, which has been largely absent in protecting our cherished environment. Absent too was the local member and Federal Minister for Fisheries, Julie Collins.

"It's not surprising to see so much community support for the environment in Tasmania. Our clean green brand is a core value to most people, and they are responding now that our island way of life is being impacted by industry pollution, with the government playing a key role in its cover up" says Jess Coughlan, NOFF campaigner.
"Crowds beyond our dreams and the passion should be giving Liberal and Labor Nightmares." - Lisa Litjens, Acting President, Neighbours of Fish Farming. "The resounding chant of VOTE SALMON OUT! should strike fear into both state and federal Liberal and Labor politicians. Tasmanians know who will stand up for them and the environment. The huge crowd leaving with 'VOTE SALMON OUT' bumper stickers will spread the word all over our island."
